Allegedly a response to Pre-US-Election heightened USN activity in "China's" near seas.

Messaged to be in response to US U-2/TR-2 overflight of live fire exercise no flight zone, no? When their no flight zone is shown to be eminently flyable they have to give some kind of response, if anything for the domestic audience

They have had CJ-10 cruise missiles and long range SAMs for a while too. Also fighter jet presence is nothing new in the SCS artificial islets.

unfortunately China is similar to that large legionary in Asterix who was sloshed up on magic potion and hence invincible for sometime... expect things to get far more bad...

Imagine in 1968-1969 a china shellacked by cultural revolution and lacking many diplomats (due to removal by arrest etc.) got the PLA to lay an ambush for the Soviet East Army thrice to initiate the Ussuri river conflict..

Not once, not twice, but thrice...This, against Brezhnev's USSR that was at the peak of its powers in 1968-69. Only the use of the 'then secret' BM-21 MBRL saturating the Chinese occupied islands with a salvo of 10,000 plus rockets saved the day... even then in the final settlement around 2002-2004 Russia had to give up half of the main contested island and 100s of smaller islets in the area. not to mention, zilch by the way of apology from China for killing 100 odd Soviet troops in multiple ambushes.

Contrast this circa 1970 China with 2020 China... US or India or any one with 'perceived disputes' will not be given any quarter from relentless bullying... many PLAN top brass are itching to settle 'past insults' by the USN in the first island or home island chain.

Anything less than an absolute resolve to bear 'pain' and the explicit threat to inflict greater pain on China won't work... anymore nitwitted ideas like FONOPs or so called distributed lethality etc based thinking is akin to earnestly courting disaster. As things stand today, the chinese have rightly judged that no nation is willing to bear that kind of pain and hence think their untrammeled run at land and resource grabs will continue.

PS: Nixon's 1970 apprehension about 'unleashing frankenstein' whilst opening communications with China has proven catastrophically prophetic 50 years later.

Hi retortPouch

What of the theory that the carrier-killer and longer range missile flights and landings in the SCS was a Chinese warning about US doubling its carrier groups in the area?

Hi ghalibkabir [at August 27, 2020 at 6:47 PM]

Yes Chinese CJ-10 cruise missiles, long range SAMs, and SCS island based fighter jets have all preceded this escalation to dual-use MRBM-IRBMs.

China may have permanently surpassed Japanese and Indian military power and is slowly moving up the curve (not only to US power) but to Russia's.

Although China and Russia have some shared goals and fears https://warsawinstitute.review/issue-2020/russia-china-a-limited-liability-military-alliance/

Lucky neither India nor Australia have joined a US naval FONOPs. For China has a long memory. A Trump win in November may lead to the US (in its isolation) only venturing as far west as Hawaii or Guam from 2021.

Kissinger's 1970 get close to China to isolate Russia was a strategic masterstroke which ended with the fall of Russian Communism from 1990.

Russia controlling the US leadership from 2016 was a Putin masterstroke.

Cheers
