South Korea (SK) has acquired manufacturing license of Type 209 from Germany. In the submarine bid of Indonesia, both SK and Germany proposed same Type 209, and SK won the bid thanks to wider range of technology transfer and fiscal support by SK government. This is extremely unpleasant for Germany who originally developed Type 209.
According to the contract, Indonesia acquires eight Type 209s from SK (five already acquired, three to be acquired). But, Indonesia is going to acquire additional four submarines.
In the coming submarine bid, again, SK proposes four Type 209s because SK does not have a license of export of Type 214 which equips with AIP and is more competitive than Type 209. TKMS approved export of Type 214 from Turkey and is going to sink SK-Type 209 [1, 2].
