Hi.
The Japanese MoD is currently developing 2 types of hypersonic weapons : “High-Velocity Gliding Projectile(高速滑空弾)” and “Hypersonic Cuise Missile(極超音速誘導弾)”.
The latter — not the former — is considered for deployment on submarines.[1]
Furthermore, some launch tests for the latter are expected to be conducted in Australia.[2]
As there is only 1 land-based missile test range in Japan, and there are few live-fire ranges, some launch tests of the Japanese missiles during the development phase and live-fire training following operational deployment have been conducted in the U.S..
(ex. Type88 SSM, Type12 SSM , Type25 SSM and Type25 HGVP)
In future, such tests and training will be conducted in Australia as well.

Last night, the Japanese MoD announced its preliminary budget request for FY2027.
The document outlines the development and procurement of a wide range of stand-off missiles (including submarine launched HCMs) and UxVs such as USVs equipped with stand-off missile launchers.
The topic attracting the most attention is the addition of an air-to-air capability to the ASM-3(Kai) supersonic ASCM.
What is interesting is that, unlike China and the U.S. which developed new VLRAAMs as part of the competition to extend the range of AAMs, Japan implemented an unconventional strategy of repurposing supersonic ACSMs as AAMs.

Japan is rapidly maturing hypersonic missiles without relying on the US.
Japan may have an export market for its hypersonic missiles in competition against India, Russia, China and the US.
