Poem: Australian Bush Fires At Christmas

This year Australia has been wracked by bush fires for weeks. This is before Australia’s hot weather Southern Hemisphere Christmas. This makes The Fire at Ross's Farm, written around 1895 by Australian poet Henry Lawson, especially poignant.

In this excerpt of the poem a rich farmer (“squatter”) seems to want to let his neighbour (Ross’s) small farm burn. But the squatter's daughter (and his conscience) persuades him, and his men, to save Ross’s farm. The poem evokes the insidious nature of fires and how people can work together to stop them:

"...One Christmas time, when months of drought
Had parched the western creeks,
The bush-fires started in the north
And travelled south for weeks.
At night along the river-side
The scene was grand and strange
The hill-fires looked like lighted streets
Of cities in the range.

The cattle-tracks between the trees
Were like long dusky aisles,
And on a sudden breeze the fire
Would sweep along for miles;
Like sounds of distant musketry
It crackled through the brakes,
And o'er the flat of silver grass
It hissed like angry snakes.

It leapt across the flowing streams
And raced o'er pastures broad;
It climbed the trees and lit the boughs
And through the scrubs it roared.
And with the stock the kangaroos
Went flying for their lives.

The sun had set on Christmas Eve,
When, through the scrub-lands wide,
Young Robert Black came riding home
As only natives ride.
He galloped to the homestead door
And gave the first alarm:
‘The fire is past the granite spur,
‘And close to Ross's farm.’

‘Now, father, send the men at once,
‘They won't be wanted here;
‘Poor Ross's wheat is all he has
‘To pull him through the year.’
‘Then let it burn,’ the squatter said;
‘I'd like to see it done —
‘I'd bless the fire if it would clear
‘Selectors from the run.

And there, for three long weary hours,
Half-blind with smoke and heat,
Old Ross and Robert fought the flames
That neared the ripened wheat.
The farmer's hand was nerved by fears
Of danger and of loss;
And Robert fought the stubborn foe
For the love of Jenny Ross

But serpent-like the curves and lines
Slipped past them, and between,
Until they reached the boundary where
The old coach-road had been.
‘The track is now our only hope,
‘There we must stand,’ cried Ross,
‘For nought on earth can stop the fire
If once it gets across.’

Then came a cruel gust of wind,
And, with a fiendish rush,
The flames lit the fence of brush.
‘The crop must burn!’ the farmer cried,
‘We cannot save it now,’
And down upon the blackened ground
He dashed the ragged bough

But wildly, in a rush of hope,
His heart began to beat,
For o'er the crackling fire he heard
The sound of horses' feet.
‘Here's help at last,’ young Robert cried,
And even as he spoke
The squatter with a dozen men
Came racing through the smoke.

Down on the ground the stockmen jumped
And bared each brawny arm,
They tore green branches from the trees
And fought for Ross's farm;
And when before the gallant band
The beaten flames gave way,
Two grimy hands in friendship joined —
And it was Christmas Day."

Despite the fires, have a Merry Christmas, especially regular contributors and commenters from around the world.

sadly and most inopportune of times really to have a bigoted boofhead climate denier as prime minister.

the chap is busy propitiating his version of 'sky daddy' by bringing in a law that licenses hate speech and open display of bigotry affording it 'legal protection'... unbelievable.

that price goof israel folau was apparently caught yammering that the fires visible from Sydney are just 'regular fires' and apparently accused Sydneyites of being 'alarmist'...

rancid rupert and his execrable troop of media baboons have ensured that a motley crew of clodhoppers, dimwits, and imbeciles are 'misgoverning' from Canberra and, are incapable of anything remotely resembling coherent policy....

Hi Ghalibkabir

You clearly have a good handle on the true leadership style in Aus :)

Meanwhile preacher-rugby player-property developer Folau is again proving himself a drongo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_Folau#Church_sermons

Looks like India's parliament has come up with a law which is pleasing everyone - well almost https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-50739593

Cheers

Difficult to explain in a blog post, but I will try

1. The Citizenship Law: It is part of a Supreme Court of India monitored process involving the creation of a National Register of Citizens (NRC) and offering non-muslim refugees citizenship, as they were and are victims of partition of India in 1947. Muslim refugees like the persecuted hazaras, shia sects continue to be covered by India's other refugee laws.

The above was made in a binding statement to the parliament by the Government.

So unlike, screaming minority votebank politicians like Mamata Banerjee of Bengal scream, this is not anti-muslim. It is just that all the demographic changes in her state due to illegal migrants (whom she made citizens by illegally issuing IDs) will now likely be reversed. (by cavorting with patriarchial clergy, Rajiv Gandhi onward have ruined Muslim women forever, as they use them as votebanks but keep them illiterate to ensure pliancy)

Now why this in the first place, (look for BBC's very cute explanation that wont stand in court, very deceptive use of 'objective facts'...same for the cuties running Guardian)

2. 1946: Jinnah of pakistan fame was insistent that the 23-25% odd muslim minority have a veto over the rest of the population. Jinnah and Nehru did not agree and India was split as mirror image of 85% Hindu:15% Muslim + others and Combined Pakistan 85% Muslim:15% Hindu+others. But by 1953, hardline muslims had driven all minorities out of West pakistan and short of targets, started to target 'deviant' muslim sects like the Ahmaddiya.

End Result: Compared to the 1941 census (again look for BBCs dirty sleight of hand referring to 1951 census..cute.. but won't wash in a court), Hindus formed huge minorities in Sindh and NWFP and the Western punjab. e.g. Peshawar alone had a near 20% Hindu Minority, Karachi was between 40-45% Hindu and so was Lahore (Hindu/Sikh).

2011: India's Hindu population share is at ~75% (not 79.8 as the census will tell you as many hidden xtians say they are hindu to illegally get 'affirmative action' benefits), Muslims up from 9.0% odd in 1951 to 15% now. what about pakistan? Muslim population is 96-97%, Hindus have all but vanished. In Bangladesh, from 23% in 1947, Hindus are less than 10% in 2017... converted, raped, killed. (ditto % loss in Sindh, pakistan)

All the numbers are verifiable. These are census figures from British authorities and South Asian Governments. and have you seen Hindus riot in Bangladesh for their rights? never, Sikhs? never... I leave you here...

PS: we are not even getting into the 10s of millions of hindu deaths from 712 AD to 1947 AD at the hands of muslims invaders and xtian colonial rulers/conquistadores/inquisitors

Hi Ghalibkabir

Thanks for the explanation. Very complex.

Seems many foreign commentators and some in India https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizenship_(Amendment)_Act,_2019 are avoiding the complexity, and history, by just claiming the Citizenship Amendment Bill is an anti-Muslim retrogade step.

it is very telling that the chief mufti or the imam of the Jama Masjid (Grand Mosque) in New Delhi has come out and announced to the congregants and Muslims of India that, the CAA law and the NRC has nothing to do with Indian Muslims and of course Afghan or pakistani muslims will not be eligible for citizenship in India. Happened an hour or so ago 18/12/19.

he is effectively affirming that the Prime Minister and Interior Minister of India were not lying in the floor of parliament when supplementary explanations as part of the bill was presented. Lutyens' Delhi (short form for all sorts of entitled crooks) has had a hard time since Modi took over.. and are now venting in a very coordinated way. Very cute too, known miscreants with verified criminal records were infiltrated into student protests.

luckily in the age of CCTV cams and drones, they were quickly spotted and outed... them paid media and the 'votebank' politicians are stung now and screaming even more to hide their red-handed capture....the Supreme Court has also currently disallowed the staying of the law. So we now know judicially these protests won't wash in all likelihood...India's Interior/Home Minister Shah is a not a fool and will not back down to these arsonists.

Re India's Citizenship Amendment Bill. There is certainly a disconnect between your balanced complex account and the more simplistic foreign press version - see BBC's view today https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-50833361

Protesters all over the world are attracted to idealistic, evocative, approaches.
