From ABC News, August 8. 2025, https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-08-08/trump-leveraging-peacekeeping-tariff-deals-asia/105618294
"Just days after imposing a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, United States President Donald Trump has increased it by another 25 per cent.
The 50 per cent tariff is set to take effect in three weeks, and comes as Mr Trump pushes for a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
He has accused India of profiting from Russian oil and ignoring civilian deaths in Ukraine.
The announcement of further tariffs on India was the latest indication that Mr Trump has leveraged peacekeeping in trade deals.
...India's Foreign Ministry has said the country was being unfairly singled out over its purchase of Russian oil.
Hussain Nadim, international relations lecturer at George Washington University, said India's high tariffs were the "result of India running a multi-alignment foreign policy at the global stage, benefiting both from the US and Russia."
He said not only Russian oil deals, but India's reluctance to buy American defence equipment was part of the reason why India faces higher tariffs compared to peers in the region..."

Ah.. it’s finally crunch time for Modi, who has sat like a deva on the fence and reaped benefits from both sides, including American manufacturing investment and cheap Russian and Iranian oil.
Trump will now find out if he or Putin are Modi’s BFFs, but this could also tilt Modi towards Russia, where he will have to accept that he’s behind Xi JinPing in Vladimir’s eyes.
Maybe India will make more deals with Russia:
"According to information published by IDRW on August 6, 2025,
Russia is prepared to offer India a second Akula-class nuclear-
powered attack submarine (SSN) during President Vladimir
Putin’s forthcoming visit to India. This proposal is intended to
compensate for the multi-year delay in the delivery of INS
Chakra III, originally leased under a 2019 agreement but now
postponed until 2028 due to complications arising from Western
sanctions and disrupted logistics chains. As India's undersea
capabilities remain stretched thin, the leasing of a second Akula-
class platform would temporarily restore the Indian Navy's
nuclear attack submarine fleet at a critical moment in the
region’s evolving security landscape."

Yes Modi might be like a "deva" (a benevolent divine being) sitting on the fence and reaped benefits from both sides. This includes American manufacturing investment and cheap Russian and Iranian oil, which India is believed to resell to other countries, at a profit.
Trump will now find out if he or Putin are Modi’s BFFs (best friends forever).
I Modi might covertly buy more Russian arms and ammunition (covertly cross subsidizing Russia's ammunition costs and production).
I reckon India as a much smaller economy than China and a much smaller Russian oil/gas buyer than China would be resigned to its secondary status.
Also all 3 countries are in BRICS an intergovernmental organization that has swelled to "ten countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRICS . BRICS is almost the inner core of the still existing Non-Aligned Movement https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-Aligned_Movement .
Cheers Pete
