Important Propulsion Components Make Submarine LIBs Work

The following is drawn from Anonymous' statements in the Comments section below.

There are important propulsion components in the Oryu (27SS) the first Soryu Lithium-ion Battery (LIBs) submarine, that allows its (NCA) LIBs to function in the most efficient way.

These components include, faster run rates of its two Kawasaki 12V25/25SB diesel engines, a more powerful SMC-8B propulsion motor and a more powerful snorkel system (with higher volume/minute intake of air and higher expulsion of exhaust gases).

Oryu’s charge rate of its LIBs is much faster than could be achieved if it had traditional lead-acid batteries (LABs). This gives Oryu a more discrete, shorter time needed to snort/snorkel for the same (or greater) fully submerged operation. Discrete means Oryu operates more quietly overall.

Also see NCA by scrolling a quarter-way down in the Battery University website.

Two routes of advanced LIBs development may be as follows:

Route 1  LABs --- First Gen LIBs --- Second Gen LIBs --- LSBs

OR

Route 2  LABs--- First Gen LIBs --- LSBs

Hi Pete

On the important peripheral technologies of LIBs

Also, the important peripheral technologies (diesels, propulsion motor, snorkel system, etc)should be established for LIBs, or excellent performance is not exhibited.

As charge rate of LIBs is much higher than LABs, the indiscretion ratio (IR, the ratio of the time spent charging the submarine batteries) is controlled by charge rate of batteries and output of generators for LIB and LAB, respectively. Most of current diesel generators which assumed for use in LABs, shows relatively low output, and in this case, IR value of LIBs remains in the level of LABs. High power diesel generator is needed to achieve lower IR for LIBs.

Even in high power diesel generator, unless snorkel system has enough exhaust capacity, the generator can not generate enough electricity. Also, quiet operation is needed.

To improve power performance of submarine by LIBs, high power but silent propulsion motor is needed.

Hi Pete (Rrevision of 17/10/18 4:41 PM)

Part I: From the view point of the investment and the important peripheral technologies for LIBs and LSBs

The top manegement of battery company try to have a return of investment on LIBs and after acquisition of enough profit. Then, he makes decision on investment for LSBs based on their techological status, profitability and result of risk analysis. Therefore, establishment of LSB technologies, prosperity and safety in market is prerequisite for application of LSBs in submarine. It takes at least 10-15 years to satisfy this prerequisite.

The important peripheral technologies (diesels, propulsion motor, snorkel system, etc) for exertion of excellent permance of LIBs and LSBs are not well-established. Current technologies are based on outdated batteries, i.e., LABs and should be reviewed for LIBs.

As charge rate of LIBs is much higher than LABs, the indiscretion ratio (IR, the ratio of the time spent charging the submarine batteries) is controlled by charge rate of batteries and output of generators for LIB and LAB, respectively. Most of current diesel generaters which assumed for use in LABs, shows relatively low output (ca.1MW), and in this case, IR of LIBs remains in the level of LABs. High power (2-3MW) diesel generator is needed to achieve lower IR for LIBs.

Even in high power diesel generator, unless snorkel system has enough exhaust capacity, the generator can not generate enough electricity. Review of sorkel system is needed for effective and silent operation of diesel generators.

Application of LIBs provide better performance at relatively high speed. However, if vibration of propulsion motor is high at high speed, high performance of LIBs becomes meaningless, because enemy can easily detect the submarine. So, development of low vibration propulsion motor is needed to exert high performance of LIBs. But, significant increase in maximam speed is not expected even in LIBs-submarine, because high output beyond capacity of current propusion motor is needed.
