Japan's government says its stepping back from plans to explicitly include the acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines in its three core security documents by [2026's] end. Instead Japan's government says its considering a scaled-down commitment to launch related research.
Meanwhile South Korea (SK) is full steam ahead on nuc sub development.

Japan wants to "consider" its move to nuclear submarines, as they would need to create additional infrastructure and related industries, though as an advanced nation in commercial nuclear technology, these barriers are not massive (they build their own reactor pressure vessels).
Unlilke Australia, who "jumped" into slaving the RN for fifty years on American/British nuclear submarines on the whim of Scotty Morrisson, with zero industrial tail for the dog to wag.

Indeed Shawn, strange forces are manipulating the would be SSN triplets.
Last year Trump thought a South Korean (SK) nuc sub was a good idea. This year the USN suggests SK nuc sub is a bad idea. While USN suggests a Japanese (J) nuc sub becomes a good idea.
J, with a huge nuclear industrial base "wants to "consider" its move to nuclear submarines" - (a nod to Hiroshima and J's Peace Constitution?) With good reasons to go nuc sub https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/10/08/japan/japan-nuke-subs-study-security-documents/
Meanwhile Aus is shelling out about 20 $Billions over 18 months + many more $Billions in future years with no real hope of receiving US or UK SSNs for 20 years.
Meanwhile Aus SSKs - even with AIP - are no match for the quality or potential quantity of a Chinese SSN force.
Dear Me :)
Hi again Shawn
I've just coined "SSN Triplets" :)
Cheers Pete
