Diamond Hull Patent: Dolphin 3 & 212CD Submerged Tonnages?

Following the February 2, 2022 article Oleg7700, from Israel, provided very interesting informationdated February 3, 2022 on Dakar-class/Dolphin 3s, Type 212CDs and other large TKMS future design displacements.

Oleg has used German language websites [1] and [2].

Dutch [3] and English [4] (the last on TKMS’ US Patent for the "Diamond hull".)

[1] Oleg pointed to Germany’s https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/schleswig-holstein/Drei-U-Boote-fuer-drei-Milliarden-Euro-TKMS-in-Kiel-baut-fuer-Israel,uboot838.html  . When translated to English, here is part of it “With a length of more than 80 meters, the new boats of the so-called Dakar class will be the largest submarines ever built in Germany.”

[2] If everything goes according to plan, the first submarine should be handed over to the Israeli Navy as early as 2029.” https://www.militaeraktuell.at/drei-neue-deutsche-u-boote-fuer-israel/  [ “.at” means an Austrian website].

“With a length of more than 80 meters, the new [Dakar/Dolphin 3s] will be the largest submarines ever built in Germany. Although also equipped with air-independent fuel cell propulsion, they will differ significantly from the boats of the Dolphin II class previously delivered to Israel by TKMS and will be specially tailored to the requirements of the Israeli Navy. Based on a computer graphic published by the manufacturer, the boats appear to have a greatly extended tower [aka fin or sail], which may indicate a vertical missile launch system (VLS) up to and including ballistic missiles. This feature is still extremely rare in conventionally powered submarines - even in the [fin/sail] - and would be a new capability for the Israeli Navy, which would thereby receive a considerable additional attack capacity.”

“...Possibly, the larger space inside the tower (English "Sail") could also offer the Israeli Navy more capacity with a view to special operations. This could, for example, enlarge the mission room for special operations teams and their equipment. The integration of a wet and dry room for the deployment of the teams and their equipment is conceivable. Alternatively, the additional space could also be used for deploying unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) or launching unmanned aerial vehicles, which are becoming standard in submarine operations. The purpose of submarines has long since gone far beyond sinking enemy ships.

“...In any case, the trend is towards larger submarines like these,” explained Rolf Wirtz as shipyard director to THB [ http://www.thb.at/ ] (Daily Port Report). In the meantime, subs with a displacement of 2,800 tonnes and more than 3,000 tonnes are being planned in the [TKMS] project department.”

[3]  https://marineschepen.nl/  "Type 212CD displacement is 2,500 tonnes (surfaced), and 2,800 tonnes (submerged). The submerged displacement of the Type 212CD E [enlarged or extended range?] (оffer for the Netherlands) is 3,200 tonnes.

Displacement of the 'Dolphin 3' / Dakar may be “3,400 tonnes. (minimum)." Rendering simplified, but - "Common Design" TKMS! Including sail/fin size...

  1. I (Pete) have copied Oleg7700's "INS "Dragon" with [Vertical Multi-Purpose Lock] VMPL" etc

to "Comments" below this part Dolphin article, as I think it more useful here:

    "Oleg7700 said...

This is a framework treaty with additional protocols negotiated at a later date. (The cost of the customer's equipment is not included) Dolphin-2AIP - 593 million euros. (Steffen Seibert, Merkel government spokesman) Dolphin-2AIP+ (INS "Dragon" with VMPL etc etc...)- plus 140 million ~ 840 milliom euros. (שינוי הייעוד, הגודל והוספת המערכות לא באים בחינם והם גררו תוספת של 140 מיליון אירו על המחיר הבסיסי)"
[ie. the sentence in Hebrew above yields]
"The change of designation, size and addition of the systems do not come for free and they have led to an increase of 140 million euros on the base price.

In 11/2021 it was already ready to leave the assembly hall, at the last minute it was decided to make some slight improvements and add more elements, so the exposure was postponed to the first half of 2022. Regards...

  2. Dear Pete,

I didn't noticed that deal even here in Germany. For me size and look are quite close to submarine type proposed to Australia: Type 216. Fits also the price tag of 1 billion Euro for each boat with 4,000 t displacement. Type 212 is about 500 million Euro.

I can imagine TKMS showed Israel military officers some drawings during developed Type 216. First submarine to be delivered in 2029 or 2027.
    (https://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/unternehmen/milliardendeal-fuer-thyssenkrupp-israel-kauft-deutsche-u-boote-fuer-drei-milliarden-euro-a-f39e1846-719a-4975-9642-744036172e71)
That smells like a lot of work already has been done.

The Netherlands may also have a look.

  3. Hi MHalblaub [at Feb 5, 2022, 8:20:00 AM]

    Welcome back.

Yes what is just an imagined concept drawing of the far in the future Dolphin 3 fits the equally imagined concept drawing of the never built Type 216.

TKMS and customer governments would only produce approximate possible drawings as EXACT and DETAILED drawings would remain secret

due to their value to "enemy nations" (including the sub's radar, sonar and electronic "signatures") and also due to their value to competing submarine selling companies.

    Regards

    Pete

  4. Israeli NAVY (חיל הים) google: "The outer light hull of the boats will have a "diamond shape",(!) the sail, will be different to increase stealth from low-frequency radars..." Аfter all - "diamond shape"... Regards.

  5. Hi Oleg7700 [at Feb 21, 2022, 4:23:00 AM]

    Thanks for the diamond tip.

Yes I suspected the diamond hull, for new TKMS subs, was to deflect radar waves.

    Regards Pete
