Note that I have avoided detail of actual power outputs of diesels, motors and AIP because such output figures are variable and often disagree. Working out precise, official and universal power outputs would take forever - or maybe for the time being...
Much emphasis is on submarine propulsion of competitors to Western countries. Those competitors being mainly North Korea, China, Russia and maybe Iran.
There is much to change, correct and add to the Table, of course. Nuclear submarine propulsion needs adding.
If the text in the Table looks a bit small (and you have WORD 7 or more modern) just simultaneously press Ctrl and + to enlarge the text. Press Ctrl and - to shrink the screen back to its usual size.

Hi Pete,
ReplyDeleteWikipedia says the Swedish Gotland class is powered by MTU diesels, not Hedemora.

Hi Pete
ReplyDeletePropulsion uses of SEMT-Pielstick PA4s for SSK are 12PA4V200SM for Walrus class, 6PA4V185VG for Agosta class 1and 12PA4V185 for Daphine class. PA4s are adopted in French SSN or SSBN for emergency use [1-3].
Sorpenes for Chile equips with 4 x MTU and other Sorpenes equip with 4 x 12PA4V200SMDS.
[1] https://www.forecastinternational.com/archive/disp_old_pdf.cfm?ARC_ID=1802
(ARCHIVED REPORT, Diesels - Archived 12/2000, December 1999) page 3
The PA range of high-speed engines is suited for submarine applications, having been optimized for snorkeling mode operation. ---The PA range includes the following types: PA4-185, PA4-200.--- According to the manufacturer, a total of 180 of these types are at use on 92 submarines in France, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Portugal, South Africa, Spain and Sweden.
[2] ibid page 4
The Walrus class submarines, now in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy, are powered by a diesel electric propulsion system comprising three generating sets, each powered by a 12PA4V200SM set developing 960 kW.
Wiki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walrus-class_submarine) describes propulsion of three diesel-electric being 5,430 shp (4 MW. But, according to MAN ( http://www.marine.man.eu/docs/default-source/shopwaredocuments/pa4-sm-smdsfba3ca1740b144429518d4e002fd7d6f.pdf?sfvrsn=3 page 6), this is mechanical output, not electrical output (3.15 MW = 1050kW x3 for 12PA4VSMDS).
[3] ibid page 6-7
8PA4 V200 (four units on two le Triomphant class ballistic missile submarin 6es, with two more to be launched); 8PA4 V185 SM (six units on three l’Inflexible class SSBN,six units on six Rubis Amethyste class SSN); 16PA4 V185 VG (six on three Agosta class SSK); 12PA1 (four units on two Daphné class SSK); 12PA4 V185 (four units on two other Daphné class SSK);

ReplyDeleteYep, you're right. Swedish Wikipedia https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Gotland_(Gtd) confirms the Gotlands have "2 st dieselmotorer, MTU 396". I've changed the text accordingly.
Here are the details for Hedemora Diesel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedemora_Diesel now taken over by an Australian company. This is on account of the Collins still using Hedemoras - choice of Hedemora's being the Collins' main continuing defect.

Pete
Hi Anonymous [at 22/11/17 12:54 AM]
ReplyDeleteCreating confusion is from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEMT_Pielstick indicating :
SEMT Pielstick has been renamed MAN DIESEL & TURBO since 2010 - with SEMT Pielstick trading under the name "MAN DIESEL SA"
I will place your details in Submarine Propulsion Table - 2nd Attempt set for Friday 24 Nov 2017 (assuming San Juan has not yet been found).
Regards
Pete
