China Recruits 162 US Nuclear & Other Scientists

Ashish Dangwal for The EurAsian Times, reports, September 24, 2022:

"China Recruited Top US Scientists To Gain Military Edge In Hypersonic, UAV & Submarine Tech – Reports"

China has ostensibly waged a long-running campaign to plant and recruit Chinese researchers from the USA’s leading national security research facilities, according to the latest reports.

The report [by STRIDER "The Los Alamos Club" 32 pages at https://www.striderintel.com/wp-content/uploads/Strider-Los-Alamos-Report.pdf ] highlighted the government of the PRC’s attempts to nurture its young and talented scientists at US national laboratories and lure the brightest minds back to the country to boost its military projects.

The government of China has allegedly made a concerted effort to send Chinese scientists to Los Alamos National Laboratory, the site of the first nuclear weapons research.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research facility working on various disciplines, including [nuclear weapons] national security, space exploration, nuclear fusion, and supercomputing.

Between 1987 and 2021, at least 162 scientists who had received scientific training at Los Alamos returned to Beijing to assist with various national research and development (R&D) projects.

There were 15 permanent staff members at Los Alamos, many of whom had extremely high levels of security clearance….”

Hi Pete
Is the title a little stretched ?

a few remarks:
-162 were trained..all recruited back?
-only 15 were permanent staff, with Hi Sec Cl. (over a 35 years period , how many went to China labs?) the other were post doc I guess which is in my mind more meaningful
-the DOE lab in Los Alamos (and elsewhere )is not involved only in nucl Weapon or military stuff
-what is the current proportion of non US born (Indian, Chinese,Russian, European .. PhD candidates at top U in the US in Sciences and Engineering ..,.In fact Berkeley wax talking about a "numerous clausus" against ethnic minorities which are over represented among top students.. Tsarist Russia with Jews.

"American",whatever that mean, tends to study en mass law or medicine for the top, study for MBA ;;; and go for "social sciences" for the less gifted..typicaly

There is probably an issue but it is quite marginal vs the general sciences training in the US (or Europe ) of Chinese bright students in the 90 /2010 which build the industrial Chinese ecosystem
I did witness in China the diffrence beetween the old excellent generation of engineers often trained in Russia and the younger one from "the cultural revolution period" which were mostly incompetent

Again this article is not only vague but rather unpleasant
what is an "ethnic chinese" ?An american citizen whose ancestors, grand parents or parents emigrated from HK, Taiwan or China ?

Thanks Anonymouses

For passing on your views and info.

Hopefully the folks at Los Alamos will be able to answer your queries. See https://www.lanl.gov/ . As the Alamos folks have visited SubMatts many times over the years.

BTW "ethnic chinese" removed from title.

Cheers
